M.E.N LGBT+ reporter Adam Maidment says Pride 2023 bears more importance than in recent years
It’s safe to say that Manchester Pride is one of the biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations in the country at this point.
Then there’s the rhetoric over drag queens. Most of us will be more than aware of the uproar and protests over Drag Queen Story Hour sessions, but we’ve also seen in just the past week alone the absolute hatred directed towards drag queen Cheryl Hole merely for competing on Celebrity Masterchef. In the UK, hate crime rates continue to rise. In October, the Home Office reported that the number of transphobic hate crimes had jumped by 56 per cent compared to the previous year. A report from VICE World News last year also found that the number of police reports based on homophobic hate crimes had more than doubled in five years - rising from 10,003 in 2016-17 to 26,824 in 2021-22.
There is a lot to be said about Manchester Pride, I get it. It is far from perfect. But it is ours. It is a chance for us, for four days at the very least, to feel a little bit safer about being ourselves in public.
