Manchester council chief executive Joanne Roney set to leave the town hall after seven years
For anyone choosing the biggest jobs in local government in the North of England, undoubtedly near the top of the list are the chief executives of the city councils of Manchester and Leeds.

"Manchester has held its nerve quite a lot in terms of its investments and where it's chosen to put its money. "We've been in a place where we've got the lowest number of looked after children for a considerable period of time. Quite a lot of investment into the integrated health and care was actually having an impact on people's life expectancy up until very recently, literally this year and last year.
"And yet, as I sit here now that budget is looking incredibly fraught for us, incredibly difficult, looking at the years ahead. And even with increased economic growth and increased business rates and windfall funding, the simple fact is short term funding from government is a problem for us.
