Manchester Town Hall is set to receive new security measures, including counter-terror bollards, as part of its large-scale renovation project.

New counter-terror bollards will be installed on St Peter’s Square in order to protect the Town Hall once it reopens. The council is currently renovating the grade-I listed building to the tune of £430 million, more than £75m over-budget. The restoration is set to be completed in just under two years’ time, with a multitude of new problems discovered in the building as staff peeled back the layers of the 1877 Gothic gem.

“It's the largest heritage project of this scale in the country, and with that brings a lot of complications,” said deputy council leader Garry Bridges when the overspend was revealed in October. “Throughout the whole time we've done work, there's been a pandemic, there has been inflation after Ukraine. But on top of that, the nature of the specialist work going on in that building is really complex.” Now, more details of the project have come to light, after architects Planit-IE submitted another planning application. The bid hopes to see new counter-terror bollards to prevent 'hostile vehicles' entering the pedestrianised zone and signposts installed on St Peter’s square, near to the Cenotaph and Lloyd Street. The application said: “To comply with the Our Town Hall Project security strategy as agreed with the counter terrorism security advisor, there is a requirement for a continuous HVM bollard line to be installed around the Cooper Street entrance to the Town Hall on St Peter's Square. “The bollard line runs in close proximity to the Town Hall Extension building and utilises the building as part of the secure line.” Images of the bollards suggest they will be decorated with the Manchester bee motif. ‘Way finding’ signposts will also be implemented, it adds.
