Manchester United reportedly passed on the opportunity to sign Harry Kane for £67 million during the January transfer window. The club had been linked with Kane previously, with manager Erik ten Hag expressing his desire to bring the England captain to Old Trafford. However, Tottenham Hotspur sold Kane to Bayern Munich for £100 million last summer. Reports now suggest that Kane's contract with Bayern Munich includes a release clause that would have allowed Manchester United to sign him for £67 million during the January window.

Manchester United reportedly missed the opportunity to sign Erik ten Hag's preferred striker target for £67 million during the January transfer window. Ten Hag had identified his desired signing before his second summer in charge, after the club spent around £3 million to acquire Wout Weghorst on loan midway through the 2022/23 season. Rasmus Hojlund ultimately joined the club before the commencement of the next campaign.

United also signed Joshua Zirkzee the previous summer, but months later, it became evident that the club required a striker once again. Ruben Amorim has already recognized this need, opting to go without a designated striker against Crystal Palace and relying on Kobbie Mainoo upfront at Old Trafford. However, had Ten Hag had his way, another England international would have spearheaded the attack last weekend. As reported by MEN Sport nearly two years ago, the then-manager was determined to sign Harry Kane. Tottenham Hotspur, however, sold Kane to Bayern Munich for £100 million a week after Hojlund's arrival in Manchester. The striker committed to a four-year contract, but reports are now surfacing that the deal includes a release clause. Bild, the German newspaper, reports that the price was £67 million this winter but will decrease to £54 million when it becomes active again next January. The clause is purportedly not in effect this summer. Following these claims, The Telegraph reports that Premier League clubs were aware of the price tag during the transfer window. However, Kane is said to be content in Germany and not considering a return to England anytime soon. Their report also names United as one of three clubs that should attempt to sign the England captain, with Chelsea and Newcastle United being the others. They even acknowledge that Kane previously expressed a desire to join the Red Devils. Tottenham, though, is reported to be able to match any bid made by another club for their all-time leading scorer. 'We have had some choices made with talents like Rasmus Hojlund,' Ten Hag said in May last year. 'I can see a striker (Kane) who already proved it, who we wanted to sign and we couldn't get him. And then we went to Rasmus because he's a talent. 'With Harry Kane you know you get 30 goals. 'I think Rasmus will get there but he needs time. 'It's not fair to assess him the same as Harry Kane. 'I would never compare two players because they are very different. 'But with Rasmus Hojlund, we get the highest potential in the striker position last summer. 'We are very happy with him, but he also needs time to adapt. 'We are very pleased he has shown his capacity to score goals.
