Despite bringing in Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, Manchester United continues to express interest in acquiring Sporting's talented winger, Geovany Quenda. The club's pursuit is being led by influential agent Jorge Mendes, who is negotiating on behalf of the 17-year-old Quenda.
Manchester United continues to show interest in signing Sporting winger Geovany Quenda , despite the recent acquisition of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. United officials met with prominent agent Jorge Mendes in November, as Mendes's Gestifute agency is now actively negotiating on behalf of the 17-year-old Quenda and his representatives. United has been monitoring Quenda's progress since his debut for Sporting in August.
Adding to the intrigue, a separate source revealed that Mendes has acquired half of Quenda's image rights. Both Quenda, 17, and Dorgu, 20, are left-footed players. While Dorgu initially occupied the wide-right position in his debut against Leicester City, Quenda played in a similar role under Ruben Amorim at Sporting this season. However, Dorgu is anticipated to primarily feature on the left wing in the future. Manager Erik ten Hag seeks attack-minded wingers to effectively support the striker.United has already loaned out Tyrell Malacia to PSV Eindhoven, who have an option to purchase him in the summer. There is uncertainty surrounding the future of fellow left-back Luke Shaw. Since February 18 last year, Shaw has not started a match for United and has played the same number of times for England as he has for United since then. He recently suffered a setback during his recovery from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for over two months. The 30-year-old is contracted to United until 2027, but it remains unclear if United will tolerate another injury-prone season from Shaw, who has only managed 18 appearances for the club since August 2023. Club and agency sources dismissed reports in Portugal last week that United planned to sign Quenda on transfer deadline day. Quenda has been a regular starter for Sporting, appearing in 18 out of 21 league games and all eight Champions League matches this season. He has scored two goals and provided seven assists. The Portugal international has transitioned from the right wing to the left wing since Amorim's departure in November, with Sporting now employing a 4-3-3 formation under new coach Tiago Aguilar. Amorim's successor, Joao Pereira, was dismissed after only eight games. Pereira retained Amorim's back three system, but Aguilar has opted for a back four, sometimes with a second striker to partner the prolific Viktor Gyokeres. Quenda, born in Guinea-Bissau, moved from Benfica's academy to Sporting at the age of 12. Amorim included him in the matchday squad as a 16-year-old last year, and he has been compared to Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka. Mendes has a long-standing relationship with United, dating back to Cristiano Ronaldo's first spell at the club in the 2000s. Mendes represented David de Gea for the majority of his 12 years at United, helped facilitate Bruno Fernandes's transfer to United in 2020, and oversaw Ronaldo's return to the club the following year. United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward embraced Mendes when he saw him in the directors' box before Ronaldo's second debut against Newcastle United in September 2021
