Rene Meulensteen has expressed surprise at Manchester United 's failure to sign Cole Palmer , a self-proclaimed fan of the club. Palmer, who honed his skills in Manchester City 's youth system, but had limited opportunities under Pep Guardiola, joined Chelsea for £42.5 million in 2023. The dynamic 22-year-old playmaker has since become one of the Premier League's most promising talents, contributing to Chelsea 's climb up the league table and fueling Guardiola's regret.
Meulensteen, who spent 12 years in two spells at Old Trafford during Sir Alex Ferguson's coaching team, criticized his former club for their hesitation, questioning why they didn't seize the opportunity to sign Palmer. Comparing United and their rivals City's squads and recruitment successes, Meulensteen stated: 'It's hypothetical, but can you imagine Manchester United could grab Erling Haaland? He'd add 25 or 30 goals straight away. Then you look at Rodri, he'd bring so much stability to the midfield, then Phil Foden, look at how incredible he was last season. When it comes to missing out on players, look at Cole Palmer. Why did he end up at Chelsea when he is a Manchester United fan? Why did United not pick him up?' During the 2023 summer transfer window, United spent £60 million on Chelsea's Mason Mount, a player who was essentially replaced by Palmer at Stamford Bridge. However, this investment is yet to yield significant returns. As Meulensteen points out, had United brought Wythenshawe-born Palmer into their ranks, perhaps even into their academy at an earlier age, it might have been a game-changer for the club, especially given Palmer's own fondness for the Red Devils
