New weather maps show a harsh cold front sweeping across the continent towards the UK, with daytime temperatures dropping to a biting -15C on the morning of Friday 13 December in some parts of eastern Europe

A blast of Scandinavian air could soon send Britain into freezing conditions. WXCharts' new weather maps reveal a severe cold front moving across the continent towards the UK, with daytime temperatures plummeting to a frosty -15C on the morning of Friday 13 December in some parts of eastern Europe. This same weather pattern is set to bring chilly conditions to the UK, with snow predicted to fall across much of northern Scotland, some areas around the Scottish Borders and over the Pennines.

This comes as we expect a much colder weather picture to develop at the start of December. Further forecasts predict snow heading to western Scotland from midday on December 9. Wintry showers will then spread to Northern Ireland, mid-Wales and parts of Cumbria and Lancashire by December 11. Weather charts show a mid-Atlantic ridge forming around this time, increasing the chance of cold air being brought down from the Arctic circle, reports the Mirror.

James Madden from Exacta Weather has given a heads up on the weather, saying: "The wintry weather during this week will be confined to higher ground in Scotland, northern England, and Wales between today and Thursday/Friday, and some overnight and non-significant wintry weather or sleet could also be recorded once again across higher elevations or a little lower during the evenings and early hours around midweek in some southern regions as an area of low pressure keeps things unsettled and...

"The sunny spells, periods of gloom, rain or heavy rain, and further periods of moderate to strong winds at times will continue to grace our shores throughout most of the week and prior to the next wintry blast and increasing risk for snow or widespread snow once again in and around early December." Meanwhile, the Met Office's latest long-range forecast for Friday 13 December to Friday 27 December indicates: "Across the south of the country, high pressure is signalled to be prevalent through the second half of December. Less settled weather is more likely at times though, especially across the north and west. This means wetter and windier spells are possible with a risk of some snow, especially across northern hills.
