Huge regional disparities are shown in the figures
More than 83,000 children were in care across England in 2023 - a 30% increase since 2010 and the highest on record, according to a report by Health Inequality North. There are huge regional disparities in the figures, with children living in the north 50% more likely to be in care than those living elsewhere in the country.
In Liverpool, one in every 64 children were living in care last year, which works out as 156 out of every 10,000 kids in the area. In St Helens, one in every 78 children were in care in 2023, followed by Wirral, with one in every 84. Elsewhere in the Liverpool City Region in Halton, one in every 71 children were living in care in 2023. That works out as 140 out of every 10,000 kids in the area.
