Councillor Manton expresses frustration over repeated vandalism at Towers Lawn public toilets, despite plans for a major renovation.

Councillor Manton, chair of the Services and Facilities Committee, expressed his profound frustration following the latest act of vandalism targeting the Towers Lawn public toilets. This facility has become a repeated victim of vandalism in recent months. Last November, renovation plans for the toilets were submitted, and after months of consultation, Market Drayton Town Council selected a proposed renovation plan.

This plan will involve a new layout and the installation of five new vandal-proof cubicles, complete with baby changing facilities in the men's, ladies, and disabled toilets. The renovation will also create a rest room for bus drivers, as part of a larger initiative to enhance the town's bus station area. Councillor Manton stated that alongside the existing facility being quite outdated, the public toilets have been subjected to a significant amount of vandalism over the past few years. He said, 'I am not often lost for words, but I am because I can’t find it within myself to find out why somebody or people would carry on doing it. To our knowledge there is no reason why someone would carry on doing this. I think it is acts of wanton vandalism by a tiny minority of people. 'It’s just crazy, and beggars belief to be honest. It’s a shame for the rest of the residents of the town.'Adding to his concern, he explained that the town council is set to spend a considerable amount of money refurbishing the facility and providing new toilets for residents, but their worry is that this vandalism will persist, resulting in a new facility constantly targeted. 'It is very worrying that there is that tiny minority in Market Drayton, it is quite upsetting,' he stated. Mr. Manton emphasized that the local authority will continue to monitor and review CCTV footage in an attempt to apprehend the vandals. Market Drayton Town Council is earnestly appealing to any residents with information to come forward and contact either the council or West Mercia Police. The council has previously been compelled to shut the public toilets and reduce their opening hours after similar incidents. The proposed plans for Towers Lawn public toilets, which have been finalized by Market Drayton Town Council, are pictured. Mr. Manton hopes that the council will not have to contemplate taking such drastic measures again to curb the vandalism. He added: 'We have closed the toilets and reduced the opening hours in the past. But, there comes to a stage where you can only do that for so long. It is a facility that is used, you can only close it for short periods intermittently before you have to then get back to a normality. 'We went through periods of closing them and reducing the opening hours last year, and it did stop a lot of the vandalism, but you can’t continue with that, you need to open them for the public to use.' 'It’s a facility in Market Drayton that we all need, the young, the elderly, passing bus and taxi drivers, everybody. But, it just ignites the conversion again, of what is the point of having the facility if it keeps getting vandalised because of the cost of repairing it time and time again?
