Here's how electric vehicle drivers can remain exempt from paying vehicle tax for another year

There are many benefits of driving an electric vehicle such as reduced carbon emissions and lower driving costs. Drivers of electric vehicles are also currently exempt from paying Vehicle Excise Duty .

But, according to financial expert Martin Lewis, there is a 'trick' that will get EV drivers an additional tax-free year. The money expert shared the trick on his X account, linking to an explanation on his Money Saving Expert website, saying to his followers: "Got an electric vehicle? There's a trick to get another year tax free..."

While EVs are currently still zero-rated for vehicle tax, EV drivers must still tax their vehicles, even though they won't actually have to pay anything. Doing this means you'll push back the deadline for paying tax on your EV to when it's next due for renewal in March 2026, assuming you renew in March 2025.
