Martin Lewis will propose widening Winter Fuel Eligibility at an upcoming meeting with the Chancellor.
Martin Lewis will urge Chancellor Rachel Reeves to look at ways to widen eligibility for Winter Fuel Payments at a meeting due to take place after the parliamentary summer recess. The consumer champion made the announcement on Friday, shortly after Ofgem announced that millions of households on a standard tariff will see annual bills rise by £149 from October 1.
Martin also warned that pensioners missing out on Winter Fuel Payments because they are not in receipt of an income-related benefit such as Pension Credit, will need to find “hundreds of pounds more than last winter”. Last year more than 11 million Winter Fuel Payments of up to £600 were issued, for the last two years the annual lump sum has also included a £300 Pensioner Cost of Living Payment.
Top Money Stories Today Martin added: “While there’s a strong argument for ending the universality of Winter Fuel Payments, eligibility is being squeezed to too narrow a group. Those just above the thresholds will be hardest hit. He said: “People can and should save by switching: The cheapest year-long fixes on the market right now are about 7 per cent LESS than the new October Price Cap, but they mightn’t be around long.
Winter heating bill help Daily Standing Charges The daily standing charge for electricity will rise slightly to 60.99 pence , as will the daily standing charge on gas - 31.66 pence . However, Ofgem has put forward proposals in a new paper that could cut annual standing charges by up to £100 each year - they currently cost around £338.
