Couples on lower incomes can claim up to five years worth of back taxes
There are a whole series of financial deadlines coming up in the next week or so, as public and personal finances gear up for the new 2024 tax year which begins April 6. But there is one group that is often overlooked for reclaiming overpaid tax, often worth over £1000 - married couples.
Taking to social media, financial guru Martin Lewis said: "2.1m couples eligible for marriage tax allowance are missing out, many are due £1250 if you do it BY 5 APRIL ."The marriage tax allowance was designed to provide tax relief to low-income couples, where one person in the partnership does not pay income tax, while the other pays the minimum 20 per cent rate on their income.
