NetEase's Marvel Rivals features destructible environments, a unique addition to the genre. The development team faced technical challenges while implementing this feature, eventually opting to switch from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 for improved performance and visual fidelity.

NetEase's Marvel Rivals boasts a unique feature in its destructible environments, setting it apart from the typical three-lane arena format. While this adds dynamism and freshness to each match, the development team encountered significant technical hurdles in implementing this feature. Initially working with Unreal Engine 4, the team faced performance issues and limitations in handling the scale of destruction while maintaining smooth gameplay.

As development progressed, the complex destruction effects and modern rendering techniques further strained Unreal Engine 4's capabilities. Faced with this challenge, the Marvel Rivals team made a bold decision: to transition the project to Unreal Engine 5. This shift involved replacing the global illumination system with Epic Games' Lumen, renowned for its stunning visuals in Fortnite, and adopting the Chaos destruction system instead of their existing tools. According to Ruan Weikan, the technical lead designer, the transition to Unreal Engine 5 took only three months but yielded significantly enhanced performance for dynamic scenes. This upgrade proved crucial in realizing the developers' vision of destructible environments, ensuring both visual fidelity and smooth gameplay. Weikan emphasized that while the mid-development engine change presented a significant risk, the final results justified the investment, ultimately making Marvel Rivals a more immersive and engaging gaming experience
