City-owned Cleveland Public Power missed a chance earlier this year to forge a contract that would supplement the utility's workforce after heavy storms like the one that hit the city Tuesday.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Despite facing what Cleveland council members call the city’s worst storm damage in recent history, city-owned Cleveland Public Power missed an opportunity this year to bolster its staff, leaving the utility less prepared than it could have been to restore power to affected residents, according to city records.
CPP sought bids for that outside help back in March. But the city’s Board of Control rejected all of those bids in late June, city records show, and no contractors were ever hired. Polensek was told the city rejected the bids because they were too costly, the councilman told Overnight, CPP was able to restore power to roughly half of the 34,348 customers who were offline at the peak of the outages. But as of 10 a.m. this morning, 17,214 customers were still without power. By 11 a.m., about 14,000 remained out of service, CPP said in a social media post.
Polensek on Wednesday morning said he was told by CPP that power may be down for five days or more for some customers. Public Works Director Frank Williams said his streets and maintenance crews have been working in high gear since the storm. He said most main roadways citywide, and downtown streets, were already made passable, but crews are still working on Wednesday to clear fallen limbs blocking residential streets in the neighborhoods.
