After all the buzz entering this year’s Masters Tournament, somehow the opening round exceeded the hype.
Rahm shot a 7-under-par 65, tying the lowest round at the Masters in the last 40 years by a player with a double bogey or worse. The other player to do it was Anthony Kim, who in the second round in 2009 carded a Masters-record 11 birdies but doubled the 10th hole. Rahm’s ball striking was exemplary Thursday, as he hit all 14 fairways and missed only one green in regulation. There have been more than 9,500 Masters rounds played since 1990.
Koepka torched Augusta National with his irons, gaining a field-best 5.1 strokes with his approach play alone in Round 1. He also gained 2.5 strokes putting Thursday, a stark contrast from the 6.8 strokes he lost on the greens in 2021 and 2022 combined at this course. This is the 14th time Koepka has led or co-led after a major championship round since 2017 — six more times than any other player in that span .Since he burst onto the major scene at the 2019 U.S.
