Max Homa won the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open — his sixth PGA Tour title — on Saturday after shooting a final-round 66. Homa started the day five shots back of 54-hole leader Sam Ryder.
Homa, 32, entered 2023 after winning two PGA Tour titles in 2022. He won his second Wells Fargo Championship in May 2022 and his second Fortinet Championship in September 2022.Homa’s performance last year earned him a spot on the Presidents Cup representing Team USA. He went 4-0 in the matches he played.
Sunday’s win is Homa’s fourth PGA Tour victory in California. Born in Burbank, Calif., Homa’s first was the 2021 Genesis Invitational, defeating Tony Finau in a playoff.We were granted yet another example of how Homa is one of the great closers on the PGA Tour right now. He started Saturday five shots behind leader Ryder at 12-under, with a lot of big names also in the hunt. It was not impossible, but it was going to be tough.
There are guys who can be in the hunt but never close. There are guys who can be in the lead but let it slip away. The common link to all of Homa’s wins is that when the moment comes, he’s been unafraid to grasp it. —First of all, let’s go ahead and book him onto the plane to Italy for the Ryder Cup. He was going already after the undefeated Presidents’ Cup performance last year, short of some major drop-off in form. That clearly has not happened, so Homa is a big part of Team USA.
The next step is major contention. He has one T13 finish in the 11 majors since he burst onto the scene in 2020, with seven missed cuts. That’s it. Find a way to matter on the weekends those four weekends a year. Otherwise, the rest is there for Homa. —
