Irish fast food chain Supermac's has won a legal challenge over use of the term 'Big Mac' for chicken products in Europe
But the ruling opens the door for other companies such as Supermac’s to use the term “Mac” in restaurant names and to sell poultry products in Europe. McDonald’s had registered the term as a trademark in Europe as a food and a category for restaurant names.Separately, Supermac’s applied for a trademark in the UK after Brexit which McDonald’s has opposed.What was said in the court ruling?
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “The decision by the EU General Court does not affect our right to use the ‘BIG MAC’ trademark.
