Following his TGL match on Tuesday, McIlroy had a firm response when asked about Charley Hoffman's
Rory McIlroy believes Charley Hoffman's strongly worded letter, which criticised players for reducing their PGA Tour appearances while playing in other leagues, was a jab at him. The Northern Irish golf star did not hold back in his comeback.
Amid the backdrop of dwindling television viewership and increasing spectator weariness due to the ongoing rift with LIV Golf, Hoffman pushed for a commitment to participate more, not less, to fortify the PGA Tour. McIlroy, who has been transparent about his plans to reduce his schedule from 27 to 25 events this season, has championed smaller fields to enhance the pace of play a concept met with resistance by regular members who fear losing chances to participate in the biggest events.
"He talks about having it be for the good of the tour, but he's also talking about himself, as well. I thought a couple of them were pointed at me a little bit because TGL, Race to Dubai, non-PGA Tour events like the Showdown that Scottie and I did in December. I've been vocal about not wanting to play quite as much so it seemed like it was pointed at me."
