22-year-old golfer Tom McKibbin faces a significant decision as he is rumored to be joining LIV Golf despite securing a PGA Tour card for 2025.
Tom McKibbin evaded questions about rumored plans to join LIV Golf during a Wednesday press conference in Abu Dhabi. The 22-year-old from Newtownabbey has been strongly connected to Jon Rahm's Legion XIII for 2025, despite securing the last PGA Tour card available to DP World Tour members last November. Reports indicate McKibbin is prepared to join Tyrrell Hatton and Caleb Surratt on Rahm's four-man team for LIV's season debut in Riyadh on February 6.
This move is believed to guarantee McKibbin a substantial €8 million from the Saudi Arabia-backed association. Currently ranked 110th globally, McKibbin's potential transition echoes that of South African golfer Dean Burmester, who joined LIV and has earned over $17 million across 27 LIV Golf starts. McKibbin had already secured a PGA Tour card for the US in 2025, promising a significant boost to his earnings from the DP World Tour. Last year, PGA Tour world number one Scottie Scheffler topped the winnings list with nearly $30 million, with the average player earning $2,109,985. Despite the lucrative PGA Tour prospects, speculation suggests McKibbin could earn €8 million simply for joining LIV, potentially swaying his decision. However, the move might negatively impact his world ranking and exclude him from events like the Ryder Cup due to LIV's lack of OWGR accreditation. Former world No. 4 Graeme McDowell, who defected to LIV in 2022, now sits at 1248th in the world rankings and hasn't participated in a major tournament since the inaugural LIV event in the summer of 2022
