Researchers show how bending implantable medical devices can lead to bacterial growth SciReports
. Endoscope disinfection often involves coiling the device, putting the inner radii surfaces in compression. While speculative, we hypothesize microbes may be trapped within these closed, re-sealed microcrack environments, and potentially protected from disinfection as a result.
Elastomers and thermoplastic materials are excellent candidates for medical devices from a mechanical and chemical standpoint, as evidenced by their increased prevalence in medical device design. However, device-associated infection remains a persistent problem in healthcare. Our work shows that, ironically, the very high elastic strain limit of these materials may also be contributing to this mechanism for microbial colonization.
