Several swimmers have already earned spots on Team USA at Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, including seven-time gold medalist Katie Ledecky and 21-year-old Gretchen Walsh, who swam to a world record in the 100-meter butterfly. NBC News' Jesse Kirsch reports.
Gretchen Walsh set an Olympic record in her preliminary heat for the women's 100-meter butterfly July 27 with a special cheerleader in the crowd: her older sister — and fellow Olympian — Alex Walsh. Gretchen Walsh, 21, who now holds both the Olympic and world records in the race, was heavily favored going into Sunday's 100-meter butterfly final. She came in second, winning the silver. Team USA's Torri Huske took home gold.
She competed in the 200-meter individual medley in Tokyo and brought home a silver medal. She qualified for the event again in June alongside teammate Kate Douglass, who won bronze in Tokyo. Gretchen Walsh qualified on the second day of the trials, ahead of her sister. Once Alex Walsh made the team as well, she said going to the Olympics with her sister “is just a dream come true.” “I had so much confidence in her that she was going to be able to make the team.
