Passengers travelling through Melbourne Airport on Wednesday could face major disruptions as Qantas, Singapore Airlines and other carriers are caught up in a dispute that would leave their planes without fuel.

More than 40 workers at one of the major refuelling companies, The Rivet Group, are set to go on a protected 24-hour strike starting at 4am on Wednesday if their demands for higher pay and better working conditions aren’t met.

The Transport Workers Union wrote to Rivet on Friday advising it of the industrial action, and encouraged management to respond to the workers’ requests responsibly to avoid disruption to flights out of the airport. said the company’s previous two offers to the union had gone unanswered beyond being deemed unsatisfactory. Rowsthorn said management approached the union on Monday to find out which parts of the package did not meet workers’ expectations.
