Jamel Kaur Singh has lived in Australia for most of her life said this was the first time she was told she wasn't Australian.

A council candidate for suburban Melbourne has been left scared for her and her family's safety after her campaign posters were vandalised with racist and hateful rhetoric just weeks out from the election.

"I've lived in this beautiful country for 44 years, since I was 4 years old, and this act of hate feels like a direct attack on me and my family," she said in a social media post. "I am local to Casey, my kids went to Gleneagles Secondary College, I run two businesses in the area. I am local, there's no two ways about it," she said."I'm as local as they come, I'm a genuine local.
