In a week of absolute chaos, the big two talk stations in Melbourne have announced the biggest shake-ups to their rosters in years. What on earth is going on?
So stunned was Melbourne’s radio audience that in the brief gap on Friday between Mitchell revealing his news and Trioli welcoming Epstein as the new host of her show, distraught ABC listeners began texting in to ask, in apparent seriousness, if Mitchell was to be her replacement.that he wasn’t about to crop up on the ABC’s Radio National – “not that they’d have me”.
Neil Mitchell announced his imminent retirement from Mornings on 3AW during an outside broadcast from Southern Cross Station on Friday.Over on 3AW, Mitchell will enjoy a long goodbye: he will see out the rest of the year, and will continue to host his podcast and to crop up on parts of the wider Nine media network even after he hangs up the mic for good. But apart from, where Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft reign supreme, it too will soon have an entirely rejigged roster.
Tom Malone, Nine’s managing director of radio, knows this is a momentous time, but he has eyes only on his own stable. “He’s won 219 survey periods over that time,” Malone continues. “It’s extraordinary. It’s a record likely never to be beaten in terms of both tenure and success. So it is a momentous day in Australian radio.”In Radioland, line-up changes are typically announced in late November to early December. That these have come now is largely due to a random cluster of personal circumstances.
