Violent thug Colin McDonald was jailed for manslaughter after the 1997 killing of a young man on his way home from a night out - it wouldn't be the last death on his hands. The M.E.N's Damon Wilkinson looks back on a notorious case
Jonathan Tripp was making his way home from a night out with workmates in Castlefiel d in April 1997 when his life came to a brutal and senseless end. The 27-year-old accountant had just landed a job with a top Manchester law firm.
McDonald, then 23, tried to mug the young accountant. A scuffle broke out near Minshull Street and Jonathan was hoisted over a wall and thrown into the waters of the Rochdale Canal 20ft below. On Easter Saturday in April 2010 Wayne Leary was knocked down and killed by a hit and run driver as he crossed Oldham Road near the Crown and Cushion pub in Failsworth with his 11-year-old daughter Aimee. They had spent the day watching Manchester United and were going to a nearby takeaway to order some food.
Five years later McDonald was back on the street again after serving half of a 10-year-prison term for the stabbing. And incredibly he found himself in the middle of yet another needless killing. After their attempts at throwing their weight around were laughed off the humiliated teens went outside and plotted a 'violent response'.
