Some forecasters have suggested hot air from the Caribbean will bring warm temperatures to the UK next month

The Met Office has delivered its verdict on recent reports that the UK is heading for an 'Indian summer'.

A spokesperson for the Met Office told the Manchester Evening News: "The most likely scenario for early October weather sees frequent unsettled weather for the UK, with a westerly regime and periods of winds and rain."According to the Met Office, an 'Indian summer' is a warm, calm spell of weather that occurs after the first frost in autumn, usually in October or perhaps early November.

Forecasters added that the driest conditions will most likely be across northern and western areas of the UK, with southern and eastern areas seeing the majority of the rainfall. It comes as September finishes on a rather damp note, with a number of weather warnings issued as some areas deal with the aftermath of heavy flooding. Parts of the UK saw more than the monthly average rainfall on Monday, with flash flooding damaging homes and disrupting travel. Areas including Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire were among the worst hit, the Met Office said previously.
