Wintry showers and icy patches are expected this evening and overnight

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice will last for 22-hours, according to the Met Office. The alert, which covers the whole of Merseyside, is in place for 12pm today until 10am tomorrow. A further weather warning for rain, snow and wind is in place for Lancashire and Greater Manchester on Saturday and Sunday. The final warning ends at 9am on Sunday. The Met Office says the wintry showers and icy patches expected this evening and overnight could lead to travel disruption.

Parts of south-west England including Plymouth and Exeter have also received a yellow warning for snow between 5am and 3pm on Thursday, with five centimetres to 10 centimetres predicted in higher parts of Dartmoor. Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “A northerly airflow will continue to feed snow showers into Scotland over the next few days, with this reaching lower levels at times and bringing the potential for some travel disruption.
