As July moves into August, we can expect some rain, thunderstorms and settled conditions with temperatures slightly above average

The Met Office has downplayed chances of a second record-breaking heatwave this summer as the UK counts the cost of fires and disruption fuelled by the searing heat.

The UK is braced for more extreme weather today with a yellow warning in place for heavy showers and thunderstorms in parts of England that could bring disruption during the afternoon. It comes after firefighters in some places faced their busiest day since the Second World War.Temperatures are set to drop by up to 15C on Wednesday giving respite from the record-breaking heatwave.

For the rest of this week, there is some immediate relief as temperatures are set to return closer to normal as cooler air moves across the country from the west. As July moves into August, we can expect a bit of rain, a risk of thunderstorms but generally more settled conditions with temperatures likely above average, although it could be very warm at times.

Simon Clarke, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, told Sky News that the fires were a “warning sign” about the impact of climate change. He said: "This is a remarkable, unprecedented event and something which obviously, because people have been saying, we are not used to seeing in this country.Met Office long-range UK forecast Sunday, July 24 to Tuesday, August 2
