While the search for a new manager is just getting underway, league sources told The Athletic this week that the expect to hire someone outside the organization to replace Buck Showalter. Since firing Showalter at the end of the regular season, it’s believed that remains in the beginning stages of replacing him. However, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns’ timeline for making the hire remains unknown.
But Counsell is from Wisconsin, still lives there during the winter and takes a great deal of pride in representing Milwaukee. The possibility of Counsell leaving is something many in the industry have speculated on, but nothing about his situation or preference is publicly known. Clearly, though, the Brewers want to bring him back. It just remains to be seen how much he wants to return. The list of external candidates does not end at Counsell.
