Where have all the hits gone for the former batting champion?
His name is not Francisco Lindor or Pete Alonso, but Jeff McNeil, their second baseman/left fielder who parlayed a batting title in 2022 into a four-year, $50 million contract that he has struggled to fulfill. , McNeil is batting .231 with a .321 on-base percentage and .306 slugging percentage — good for an 82 OPS+, which would be the worst mark of his career. He has one home run and seven RBIs and was dropped to the eighth spot in the order Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
McNeil is an avid golfer who won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in the offseason. Is his golf game getting in the way of his baseball swing? Probably not — lots of players golf and enjoy hobbies outside of baseball. But McNeil has been a below average offensive player the last two seasons. While his second-best home run output came in 2023 with 10, he also posted a .711 OPS and a 97 OPS+. Power is not McNeil’s calling card — the 23 home runs in 2019 were an anomaly — he’s a contact, line-drive hitter who is hard to strike out.
