SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio hosted an official visit from Mexico. The Mexican Foreign Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, made her first visit to the city in two decadesTh
The meeting took place at the Mexican Cultural Institute located downtown, where Foreign Secretary Bárcena engaged in discussions with Mayor Ron Nirenberg and other local leaders.
Among the topics discussed was the contentious Texas law known as S.B. 4, which remains in legal limbo. This law would grant local law enforcement agencies the authority to arrest individuals suspected of crossing the border illegally, a measure that Bárcena expressed deep concerns about. During the meeting, Bárcena voiced apprehension about the potential for S.B. 4. She emphasized the importance of fostering inclusivity and respect for human rights, particularly in border regions like Texas.
"Esos lo que nos preocupa de la ley S.B. 4 que no ha entrado en vigor, pero que ya generó un ambiente de xenofobia, de discriminación," said Bárcena. Bárcena raised another issue, the presence of razor wire extending onto the Mexican side of the border. She condemned this as a violation of national accords and called for the removal of such barriers, including wire and buoys.
