Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has written to Google urging them not to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' following a directive from former US President Donald Trump.

Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has written a letter to Google expressing her disapproval of the planned renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America'. This change stems from a directive signed by former US President Donald Trump shortly after his inauguration, demanding the name alteration. Google has stated that Google Maps will reflect the name change for US users once it is officially implemented in the US Geographic Names System.

However, Sheinbaum argues that the US lacks the authority to unilaterally change the name of a shared body of water. She contends that the change violates international law as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea limits a country's sovereign territory to 12 nautical miles from its coastline. Sheinbaum pointed out that the Gulf of Mexico extends far beyond the US coastline, encompassing shared waters with Cuba and Mexico. The name change, while noticeable for US users, will remain 'Gulf of Mexico' for users in Mexico and both names will be displayed for users in other countries. Google maintains its policy of aligning name changes with official government sources. They also confirmed that they will be changing the name of Mount Denali back to Mount McKinley in the US, complying with another executive order from Trump. Google states that both names will be displayed based on the user's location. Sheinbaum criticized Google's decision, asserting that the company should not yield to a single country's mandate regarding the name of an international sea. She jokingly suggested that if the change were to occur, Google should rename the US to 'Mexican America' for users in Mexico. Sheinbaum previously stated that while Trump may designate it as the 'Gulf of America' within his continental shelf, for Mexico and the rest of the world, it will remain the 'Gulf of Mexico'
