President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America'. While U.S. agencies are obliged to use the new name, other countries are not.
President Donald Trump has made good on his promise to rename the Gulf of Mexico Gulf of America with one of the scores of executive orders he signed on his first day in office. On Monday, Trump tasked the Secretary of the Interior to rename the gulf, and media reported that the Coast Guard is already using the name.
The agency in charge of officially changing the name of the Gulf is the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, which was tasked with providing guidance to ensure that all federal agencies use the new name on maps, contracts, and other documentation, Bloomberg reported. The report quoted the President as motivating his decision by saying, 'We do most of the work there and it's ours,' and goes on to note that the maritime border actually runs roughly along the middle of the Gulf.
