Victims of the 2017 terror attack are taking legal action against the security services

A lawyer representing victims of the Manchester Arena bombing has accused MI5 of 'institutional defensiveness' as the families pursue a legal action to achieve 'vindication'.

One of the officials who handled the information, identified only as Witness C, concluded that the first piece of information 'might have some national security significance', Sir John revealed. The same officer also assessed the second piece of intelligence and said it was possibly 'of pressing national security concern', Sir John's report published in March last year revealed.

In his submissions on behalf of the families, Mr Weatherby accused MI5 of 'retrospective justification'. Islamic State-inspired Abedi was of Libyan heritage and he flew back from the country to pick up explosives he had left in a Nissan Micra he had left parked in Rusholme before carrying out the attack. Mr Weatherby said the the threat from the terror group in Libya was 'publicly known' at the time.

He strenuously denied the allegation of a lack of candour and said: "The first point of course is that the inquiry was an inquisitorial process. Nobody was running a case. The object for all those involved including my client was to give the inquiry the fullest possible opportunity that it could in the search for the truth."
