U.S. military personnel have begun moving aid to Gaza using a makeshift pier afloat off the Palestinian territory’s coastline. U.S. Central Command said.

South Africa made a searing and impassioned plea Thursday for the International Court of Justice to order Israel to cease all military operations in the Gaza Strip, arguing that its assault on Rafah and closure of key crossings are aimed at destroying “the essential foundations of Palestinian life” there. In a hearing at The Hague’s Peace Palace, South Africa’s legal team asked the ICJ to issue urgent “provisional measures” to stem the violence in Gaza.

South Africa brought a case against Israel late last year, accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention in its prosecution of the war, which it launched after a brutal attack by Hamas militants on Oct. 7. Israeli officials have rejected the genocide charges, arguing that the soaring death toll in Gaza is an unavoidable consequence of battling an enemy that embeds in civilian areas. A delegation led by the deputy attorney general will respond to South Africa in court Friday.
