Local Aboriginal landowners had requested archaeological excavation of the area after it was destroyed by Rio Tinto blasting in May 2020.
The tooth of a Tasmanian Devil has been uncovered in the rubble of the Juukan Gorge rock shelter destroyed by mining giant Rio Tinto, with Aboriginal landowners claiming the discovery has the potential to rewrite the history of Western Australia’s vast Pilbara region.
“Take the tooth of the Tasmanian Devil for example. There is no previous physical evidence that they even lived in the Pilbara, and the last evidence there is of devils living in WA was in the southwest around 3,000 years ago,” he said. “I am proud that our requirements have led to these significant discoveries, which have the potential to rewrite what we know about the deep past of the Pilbara,” Mr Hayes said.
The excavation has been taking place for almost two years and complements findings from nearby excavations that were undertaken in 2008 and 2014, which discovered 5000-year-old braided human hair that was DNA tested and linked to Aboriginal people living in the Pilbara.
