An uncapped mine shaft has been discovered at Brinsley Headstocks in Nottinghamshire , prompting safety warnings and temporary restrictions on access to the popular beauty spot. The headstocks, remnants of the historic Brinsley Colliery which operated from 1842 to 1934, are currently undergoing a £220,000 reconstruction project. The project, led by Broxtowe Borough Council, aims to replace the deteriorating wooden headstocks with a safer and more durable structure.
\The discovery of the uncapped mine shaft prompted the council to erect Heras fencing around the perimeter of the site and issue a warning to visitors. Notices have been placed to discourage people from approaching the fenced-off area, while additional lighting will be installed during evening hours to ensure safety. Daily site checks will be conducted, and a structural engineer will also visit the site to assess the situation. The fenced area may be expanded if necessary. \The council reassures that the reconstruction project is progressing as planned and on track to be completed by the end of the year. The revamped site will feature new ponds, a wildflower meadow, and a memorial orchard dedicated to the miners who lost their lives at the colliery. A carved seat sculpture will also be crafted using timbers salvaged from the original headstocks, serving as a lasting tribute to the site's history
