CST says there has been a 400 per cent increase in antisemitic attacks since Israel’s retaliatory air strikes in Gaza began. “The police are already making arrests that would not have occurred two weeks ago because of the kinds of things that occurring on demonstrations,” Mr Gardner added. Ben Jamal, the director of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, told the OpenDemocracy website that Ms Braverman’s letter was an “assault on the basic right of British citizens to show solidarity for the Palestinian people’s legitimate desire to have their rights realised.”

“They will be sceptical about what happens when cases get to court, and whether prosecutions will be successful – a lot of it is legislation that still has to be tested out. Sir Peter said he believed police chiefs would be briefing frontline officers on what crosses the line into a criminal offence when it comes to pro-Palestinian protests, and that further interference from politicians was not necessary.
