The Yankees and Mets could both be interested in another star hitter, too.
One MLB insider thinks it’s a possibility — and it could be for Alex Bregman, the Houston Astros’ third baseman who is playing on the last year of his contract.
Because Soto won’t re-sign during the offseason — no matter how hard the Yankees try — he is set to test free agency, where he could command more than $500 million. But the Bregman wrinkle is an interesting one. Even with Vientos’ defensive improvements, he’s probably not a full-time third baseman, though he’s shown he can hit like one .
Despite two World Series and a career of solid offensive production, Bregman is a risky player because he excels more with soft skills — low chase rate, low strikeout rate, good command of the strike zone — and less with elite batted ball metrics; his barrel rate is below average and his average exit velocity is in the 52nd percentile. He’s also not an elite defender.
