A Mobile County lawmaker has pre-filed a bill that would provide funding for inspecting seafood that was not caught or raised in the U.S. If passed, House Bill 1 would create the Imported Seafood Safety Fund.
"In my opinion, this provided a way we needed to pay for inspectors to inspect the seafood that comes from all around the world. We want to make sure it is safe, and that people are not getting hurt by it,” he said. "One of the things we lack on imported seafood versus domestic seafood is the chain of custody. “We do not always know exactly where that seafood has come from, who handles it, that sort of thing,” said Brown.
"It’s a safety factor but at the same time it's an economic factor that we're trying to help our seafood industry here and make others play by the same rules that they have to,” he said.
