Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed made it official at July’s first City Council meeting that the search for a permanent police chief is on.

In a press release, it was announced that the company has already started identifying candidates. Councilman Glen Pruitt said he hopes the city will hire a chief who stands behind their officers. Pruitt introduced three ordinances relating to public safety, all of which were carried over or put into committee after gaining criticism from other council members and the mayor. The first ordinance was a change to what the council had agreed upon in terms of raises for the Montgomery Police Department.
Pruitt’s next proposed ordinance would be to authorize payments to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for assisting the city until the Montgomery Police Department reaches 400 officers.
