A new American diner, Monty's Diner , has officially opened its doors inside the departures lounge of Liverpool John Lennon Airport , offering passengers a taste of classic American cuisine before they embark on their journeys. This addition marks the latest stage in a multi-million pound investment program aimed at enhancing the passenger experience at the airport, with further upgrades planned throughout 2025.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport recently secured the title of the UK's best airport in the 2024 Which? annual survey, and airport officials are determined to elevate the flying experience for passengers further by introducing a diverse range of new food and beverage options. All of the airport's new outlets, operated by the food travel business SSP, are expected to be fully operational in time for the summer season. Monty's Diner, open from 9am today, is an all-day diner with a capacity of almost 200 passengers, serving up a menu of nostalgic favorites like burgers, hotdogs, milkshakes, and more. This table service restaurant aims to provide a welcoming and comfortable space for families and all travelers seeking a satisfying meal or a refreshing drink before their flights. The diner's interior transports guests back to the golden age of Americana, with neon accents, a 1950s-style mirrored bar, and a selection of booth and counter seating. The atmosphere is infused with touches of Americana, including locally-inspired images of music icons The Beatles and Cilla Black. On the menu, diners can indulge in an 'all-American burger,' a taco salad, a mac and cheese hot dog, and an array of decadent desserts, including a banana split. The all-American burger, as described by SSP's food and drink director Jim Norris, is a 'heck of an eat,' featuring two smash beef patties, smashed hash browns, mac and cheese, bacon, onion rings, all topped with slaw and fries. Lucy O'Shaughnessy, commercial director at Liverpool Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, stating, 'We wanted to offer something for different passengers and different travel experiences. If I was with my family I'd be in here today - if I was with the girls I'd be in Sable & Co. It's for family dining, groups, fuelling people up for their flights all day long and this perfectly ticks that box.' She added, 'I think this massively complements what we did last year with Sable & Co which really elevated the food and drink offering at the airport. That was about a premium brand and this is about family favourites, good food and a bit of a quirky American theme. We can push the boundaries in Liverpool, as a regional airport, and this does that for us.' Jim Norris further elaborated on the diner's concept, saying, 'It's classic American 50s diner food with a modern twist. It's really quick to serve so people can get in and out as quickly as possible. We've got all the classics - burgers, hotdogs, mac and cheese, salads, and then we put a few twists on things, like a great taco salad which is a bit healthier and fresher. We've got diner style desserts like banana splits and apple pie, plus milkshakes - but you can also make those 'hard' shakes with a bit of alcohol in there.'Extensive renovation work is ongoing in the airport's departures lounge, aimed at creating a range of new, expanded, and refurbished passenger facilities in the coming months. Passengers departing from the airport will observe that the Kissing Gate pub and kitchen is currently undergoing renovation, with plans to enlarge and upgrade the popular venue. Additionally, a new expanded premium lounge, double the size of the existing facility, is being constructed. Furthermore, a third coffee shop will be introduced, and the existing Starbucks and Upper Crust units will be modernized, with new brands joining the retail mix to cater to the growing passenger numbers. These latest food and beverage enhancements are part of a larger project that commenced last winter following the signing of a new long-term deal with SSP, extending their operations at the airport until at least 2036. Last year, the airport unveiled Sable & Co., a 'premium' bar and kitchen in the departures lounge, offering upscale food and drinks with breathtaking views of the airfield. Construction work in the airport's departures lounge will continue throughout the winter season to ensure all improvements are completed before the summer 2025 season
