New statistics reveal a rise in home deaths in Yorkshire and The Humber following the coronavirus pandemic. While the percentage of deaths at home slightly decreased from 2022, it still represents a significant increase compared to pre-pandemic levels. This trend coincides with a decrease in hospital deaths nationally. Experts highlight the need for improved access to home care services to ensure equitable end-of-life care.
New statistics have revealed an increase in Yorkshire and The Humber residents choosing to die at home after the coronavirus pandemic.
Comparatively, 2023 saw 28.4per cent of England's deaths occur at home, marking a significant climb from 24.4 per cent back in 2019. Concurrently, there has been a reduction in hospital deaths, dropping from 44.9 per cent pre-COVID-19 to just 42.8 per cent in 2023. The figures come as health and social care think tank Nuffield Trust says the pandemic has "amplified" the country-wide move towards end-of-life care in the familiar surroundings of one's own home but stressed the need for better access to supportive services.
