Sadio Mane has opened up about a near move to Manchester United before joining Liverpool, revealing how a conversation with Jurgen Klopp convinced him to choose Anfield.
Sadio Mane revealed that he was close to signing for Manchester United before opting to join Jurgen Klopp 's Liverpool. After impressing in the Premier League with Southampton, where he notably scored the fastest hat-trick in the league's history against Aston Villa in 2015 in just two minutes and 56 seconds, Mane was a highly sought-after player by 2016.
Choosing Anfield as his next stop, he became part of Liverpool's formidable attacking trio with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino – playing a pivotal role in winning the Champions League and Premier League titles, among other honours, during Klopp's tenure. However, Mane's career could have taken a different turn, as he shared that a move to Old Trafford was a real possibility before he was swayed by Klopp over then-Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal. Speaking in 2019, he said: 'I was really, really close because I even met up with them. They made an offer, but in the same week, Klopp called me. He said, 'I think it's the right club, the right coach for you, and I think it's better that you go to Liverpool'. For me, I think it was the right time as well. I said, 'I am going to Liverpool'.' After securing six major titles with Liverpool, Mane left the Premier League in 2022 for a brief spell at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga before joining his current team, Al-Nassr, in Saudi Arabia. Mane's path could have been markedly different, though, had he chosen United, who are gearing up to take on Arne Slot's side today (January 5) following a lacklustre start to the 2024/25 campaign.
