A Hampshire mother is challenging herself to buy everything for Christmas, including food, decorations, and gifts, locally within a 10-mile radius of her home. This eco-conscious initiative aims to support small businesses and reduce her environmental footprint.
Mother of one Claire Mitchell is challenging herself to source everything, from decorations to gifts, within a 10-mile radius of her Hampshire home. Claire Mitchell is self-employed and has lots of time to look for cheap deals in her local area, she said. The 45-year-old has always considered herself to be quite green-minded, and green-fingered, as the owner of a small sustainable horticulture business.
the mother of one said: “I came up with the idea a couple of years ago, challenging myself to buy Christmas presents from shops and suppliers within a 10-mile area of where I live. “My work as a small business owner has made me increasingly aware of the importance of Christmas spending for small businesses so I decided to give it a whirl this time around.and while our outgoings are relatively modest, like many people we’ve been hit by the cost of living crisis and that’s affected all of our “It’s not the defining reason behind the initiative, but it does help me think and really decide who and where I want to spend my hard-earned money.“Small businesses and shops are closing up and down our high streets, and if we don’t use them, we will lose them.” Ms Mitchell originally set herself a £25 budget to cover food, alcohol, decorations and gifts this year for herself, her husband, their son and her parents. Although she believes she could have made this work, her sister and her family recently asked if they could join them on the big day, so she has decided to double it. “I have sourced 1kg of locally raised shin of beef from Bere Mill – a local farm – which cost £11 and that’ll be the basis of a lovely slow-cooked beef pie. “This will be accompanied by pommes dauphinoise with potatoes and veg from our local grocer, which only cost a few pounds, and for dessert, I’m probably make a chocolate roll, buying the ingredients from a local refillery sho
