Deveca Rose left her two sets of twins, aged three and four, unattended in a locked house while she went shopping. The fire broke out, killing all four boys. Rose was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
A mother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the manslaughter of her four sons who died in a house fire while she was out shopping. Deveca Rose left her two sets of twins, aged three and four, in the locked terraced house in Sutton on the evening of December 16, 2021. Rose was found guilty in October of last year of the manslaughter of her twins, Leyton and Logan Hoath, aged three, and her older brothers, Kyson and Bryson Hoath, aged four.
The 30-year-old had denied the charges of manslaughter and child cruelty, claiming she had mental health problems and a diminished capacity due to vision loss. During sentencing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC stated that Rose had left her four sons to go shopping at a nearby Sainsbury's, resulting in their deaths. The court heard that broken lightbulbs led to tea lights being used for illumination and that cigarettes were found throughout the property, listed as possible causes of the fire. Judge Lucraft emphasized that the children were too young to know what to do in such a situation and that they faced acute suffering in their final moments. He also noted that Rose abused a position of trust and that the children were left in an unsafe environment. The judge highlighted potential failings by social services, stating that the family should have been on an 'enhanced plan' given Rose's mental health struggles. This was never addressed. The court heard that the family had been living in squalor, surrounded by rubbish and human excrement, before the tragedy. Rose had been to Sainsbury's earlier that day and purchased items not deemed 'essential or vital' while her children perished in the fire. Prosecutor Kate Lumsdon KC described the house as having 'rubbish thickly spread throughout,' with the toilet and bath unusable. Buckets and pots were used as makeshift toilets. The boys are believed to have run upstairs and cried for help but were unable to escape the locked house and died under a bed. Although Rose ensured the children were well-dressed, they lived in 'very poor conditions.' She rejected offers of help from both family and social services, jurors were told
