Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell has resigned from his position following a recent downturn in the team's form and the relentless personal abuse he and his family have endured. The Scottish Premiership club reluctantly accepted Kettlewell's resignation, acknowledging the toll the abuse has taken on him.
Stuart Kettlewell has resigned as Motherwell manager, citing the personal abuse he has received during a recent slump in the team's form. The Scottish Premiership club announced the 40-year-old's departure on Monday, saying the board of directors of the fan-owned club 'have very reluctantly accepted' his decision. Motherwell have lost three games in a row, are on a four-match winless streak, and have only managed one victory in their last nine outings.
Chief executive Brian Caldwell expressed sadness at Kettlewell's departure, stating on the club website: 'It's really sad that Stuart felt that the time was right to move on. 'He had an exceptional record and has generated an impressive amount of transfer income for the club. 'He has been a critical factor in the development of Motherwell academy graduates, as well as developing young loan players during his tenure.' Caldwell continued, emphasizing the club's commitment to its personnel: 'When Stuart approached me, I was very disappointed to learn the effect this was having on his family and how he was feeling. No manager, player, or club employee, every one of whom gives their all for the club, should feel this way.' Last week, Caldwell had pointed out that Kettlewell's side were outperforming rivals with larger budgets and were nine points better off at the same stage last season. However, the Saturday loss to bottom side St Johnstone, 2-1 away from home, proved to be the final straw. Motherwell confirmed that Kettlewell approached Caldwell on Monday morning to resign, explaining that the personal abuse was now affecting his family, to the point where they didn't wish to attend games. Kettlewell, who previously managed Ross County in the top flight, boasts a 41.3% win percentage for his 92 games in charge, which Motherwell highlight as the highest among their seven managers since Stuart McCall's departure in 2014. During his tenure, Kettlewell guided the team to safety from relegation in his first three months, securing 30 points out of a possible 42. He also oversaw a 10-game unbeaten run last season, their longest streak since 2010, narrowly missing out on the top six. The team also reached the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals this season
