A motoring expert from LKQ Euro Car Parts warns drivers about the importance of keeping their license plates clean to avoid fines of up to £1,000. Dirty number plates can obstruct identification by other road users, authorities, and traffic cameras, leading to penalties. The expert advises regular cleaning, even just a quick wash with soapy water, to ensure legibility and compliance with the Highway Code.

A motoring expert is warning drivers about the importance of keeping their car license plate clean to avoid hefty fines. While many might not enjoy the idea of washing their cars in the chilly weather, it's crucial during winter when vehicles get dirtier quicker due to road salt and rain. The specialist from LKQ Euro Car Parts has highlighted that ensuring your number plates are clear is essential to dodge penalties.

They advised: 'The number plates on your vehicle should be legible at all times, and drivers caught with an obstructed plate could receive a fine of up to £1,000.' They added: 'Something as simple as a build-up of dirt and dust can block the letters and numbers, so it's important to clean your vehicle regularly to ensure your number plate is always visible.' Dirty number plates breach the Highway Code as they prevent other road users, authorities, and traffic cameras from identifying the vehicle. Offenders risk being pulled over by police or caught by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Those found driving with unclean or obscured number plates could face fines up to £1,000 and receive three penalty points on their licence, reports the Express. However, LKQ Euro Car Parts reassured drivers that there's no need to clean the entire car frequently, but regular cleaning of the number plates is necessary to stay within the law. They cautioned: 'If you don't have time to clean your whole vehicle, make sure to check your numberplate on a regular basis and give it a quick wash down with a sponge and some soapy water so it remains legible and within regulations. This should only take a minute or two, and can mean you avoid a hefty fine.' For optimal care, they recommend using warm soapy water on the number plate to prevent potential damage from harsh chemicals
