The Range Rover Velar P400e is the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the Velar range, though its builder, Jaguar Land Rover , prefers to call such vehicles “electric hybrids”. The Velar, meanwhile, is the mid-size Rangie, sitting between the RR Evoque and RR Sport.It’s $138,800 plus on-road costs, making it the dearest Velar. Lesser models start at $98,600 plus on-road costs.The 400 in the model designation stands for the output in brake horsepower.
The Velar has a relatively large battery for a PHEV , giving an electric-only range of about 50 kilometres. Achieving the official fuel economy figure – 2.7 L/100km – requires regular plugging in. Power goes to all four wheels, and 0-100km/h takes as little as 5.4 seconds.Because you like the PHEV technology, want to save fuel and spit out fewer harmful emissions, and perhaps you need to leave silently in the morning.
On-road refinement is helped by active noise cancellation, and ride quality impresses for a vehicle that is also vastly capable off-road. That said, are you really going to take it off-road? If so, you might want a spare tyre . Charging is easy enough; the battery will go from empty to full overnight even on a standard power point. The software performs some clever energy-saving tricks if you use the in-built navigation; many will use the more convenient wireless phone mirroring instead.Many things, such as the ventilation, require too much scrolling through screen menus. We like minimalism, but give us a few more buttons, please.
Once the battery is depleted, it’s not particularly frugal even in default hybrid mode. Also the power delivery in our car wasn’t as smooth as a purely internal combustion or purely electric drivetrain. It often kicked down a gear sharply, or retarded inconsistently on a lift of the throttle.The list of plug-in hybrid SUVs is growing, and in the right circumstances they can provide some advantages of petrol and electric.
