Not checking before you set off could cost you dear
With the RAC predicting more than 14million journeys made by car across the Easter bank holiday weekend, experts at etyres are urging drivers to make a quick 20p car check before setting off. Drivers are being warned that ignoring this 20p tyre pressure check will only save them a matter of minutes in time but cost them up to £10,000 in driving fines, as it’s a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per illegal tyre.
Richard Croft, tyre expert and operations director at etyres, said: “Neglecting to check your tyre pressure before embarking on a road trip is like leaving home without a map – you're setting yourself up for a journey filled with unnecessary risks and potential hazards. “It’s common practice for Brits to rely on tyre pressure sensors, however these typically highlight a loss of 25% in tyre pressure. By the time these sensors flash, your tyre is severely underinflated, so tyres should still be regularly checked before road trips regardless.”
You can check whether your car needs its tyres topped up with air by placing a 20p coin in the grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is still visible when you insert it, then it could mean your tyre pressure is lower than it should be.In an online poll conducted by etyres, three-quarters of drivers admitted that they fail to check tyre pressure before every road trip, with just 27% of Brits committing to tyre pressure checks each time.
